Choosing a sperm donor

Find out more about the rules for sperm donation, about being a known, anonymous or non-anonymous donor.

Anonymous sperm donor

If you choose to receive sperm from an anonymous sperm donor, the only available information will be the donor's skin colour, hair colour, eye colour, blood type, height, and weight.

Non-anonymous sperm donor

If you choose to receive sperm from a non-anonymous sperm donor, you can access more detailed information about the donor compared to an anonymous donation. What information you can receive depends on an agreement between the sperm donor and the sperm bank/fertility clinic.

If you choose to receive sperm from a non-anonymous sperm donor with an extended donor profile, you will not be informed of the donor's identity, but it is possible to get more information about the donor, such as occupation, hobbies, education, voice sample, baby photos etc.

If you choose to receive sperm from an open sperm donor, the donor's identity will remain confidential at the time of donation. However, the donor has consented to provide additional information later, such as allowing the child to learn their identity upon turning 18.

Known sperm donor

You can choose to use a sperm donor whose identity you know at the time of donation. This could be a donor you personally bring with you for the fertility treatment.

Parenthood arrangements must be established Before proceeding with treatment using a known donor. Read more about the rules for registeringparenthood here on the website.
